What's In Season - Weekly Newsletter #14

September 11th, 2021

Well, we made it through the craziness of Labor Day Weekend/Week! Always such a busy, busy time for us. It seems we can never prepare enough! Now that it has passed, we can focus on preparations for the Fall and Winter season.

In honor of the cooler nights, things like Romanesco, Green Cabbage, and Savoy Cabbage are now in The Add-On Market. Acorn and Spaghetti Squash have also made an appearance. We have a gorgeous new patch of Red Cherry Belle, French Breakfast and White Icicle Radishes to accompany our delicious Winter Radishes. Mixed Lettuce Bunches have begun again, while this week's Salad Bundle features a Baby Lettuce and Arugula Mix.

Despite the cooler nights, our newest Snap Bean patch is sizing up while Cucumbers, Pickles, and Summer Squash are winding down. Tomatoes and Peppers keep getting better, while our Sweet Melons are at their peak. Be sure to grab some of our adorable, mini Sugar Cube cantaloupe this week. They're not to be missed!

For those of you that are looking for a project, we now have Corn by the Case, Bulk Beefsteak Canning Tomatoes, Bulk Paste Tomatoes, Bulk Italian Prune Plums, Bulk Bartlett Pears, and Raspberries by the flat and half-flat. Please let me know if you're looking for anything else bulk, and I'll be sure to add it to the market listings. This will likely be the final week for Bulk Freestone Peaches.

As mentioned last week, Deliveries & Pickups will occur on Wednesdays, except West Allis Farmers' Market. The weekly order-by deadline is back to Mondays at noon.

We are still planning on transitioning away from the choose-your-own "I Got It" Box (as I wrote in last week's newsletter.) With all the hustle and bustle of Labor Day Week, I hadn't had the chance to private-message members, but I will likely have more time for discussion regarding our planned changes this week. If you have messaged me regarding the changes, please know that I've read it and will get back to you soon!

Please keep in mind, the Add-On Market will remain as it is, so you're welcome to continue to add on to your farmer's choice box as needed. The only real change is that the option of the "I Got It" Box will be discontinued until we can find more helpers in the pack shed.

And, again, please let me know if you are a die-hard fan of the choose-your-own "I Got It" Box, or if you have any suggestions. I am trying to think of the best way to give you options while making things more efficient on the farm. If you've been ordering the "I Got It" Box frequently or if you're a Home Delivery PLUS member, I will contact you privately regarding these changes.

I hope you had a wonderful holiday weekend, and here's to the welcome, cooler weather!

Take Care,

The Centgraf's

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Quinoa Tabbouleh

I think one of the reasons my husband married me was because of this salad! Honestly, I throw it together from memory and have tweaked it a bit over the years, but this recipe from Bon Appetit is somewhat close.

I double the garlic, skip the scallions, and do a 50/50 ratio of quinoa and bulgar wheat. I also blend the garlic in with the lemon juice, olive oil and salt to create a more even flavor. But, with fresh tomatoes, sweet cucumbers and fragrant herbs, you can't go wrong!
