What's In Season - Weekly Newsletter #11

August 21st, 2021

Another busy, busy week on the farm!

This week was full of planting, weeding, pruning, picking, washing, wiping eggs, filling online orders, filling restaurant orders, loading trucks, selling at markets, driving to MI, rushing through bookwork, and more weeding and picking!

Fortunately, our hard work was paid off with happy customers, healthy vegetables and the joy of finding ripe Cantaloupe in the fields! We're starting off our melon season with full-size Goddess Cantaloupe - it's so delicious and sweet - and will soon have our Sugar Cube mini cantaloupe, candy-sweet Crenshaw, refreshing Honey Dew and even a few Watermelon.

Tomatoes are ripening up more regularly now, although the elements have not been kind to our tomato plants this year. Nonetheless, our Artisan Cocktail Mix is beautiful, Campari Tomatoes are wonderful, and we're still finding a gorgeous Heirloom Tomato here and there. Full-Size Beefsteaks have also begun and, despite some superficial blemishes, still ripen up to make a great BLT!

On the other hand, our Cole Crop patch is doing great so far! We have truly gorgeous heads of Rainbow Cauliflower, melt-in-your-mouth Broccolini, beautiful Red Cabbage, and nice larger heads of our "Sweetheart" Caraflex Cabbage. If you haven't tried them yet, these unique, pointy heads of cabbage make a wonderful slaw, a fantastic roasted cabbage-wedge dish, or perfectly formed cabbage rolls.

New This Week, on our farm is Full-Size Japanese Eggplant, pretty Salad Turnips, a new patch of tender Snap and Italian "Roma" Beans, Cantaloupe, Fennel Bulb, and more Potato varieties. New from K & K Farms in Michigan are Raspberries, Paula Red Apples, more Early Gold Apples, and some adorable Saturn "Doughnut" Peaches.

Also, since our battered-but-not-bruised restaurant clients are back in the swing of things, my weekly timing on restocking the market is creeping closer to the weekend. Due to this, we've extended ordering time to Mondays at noon.

Thanks so much!
